Raft Guide Training Course Information
The 6 day basic raft guide training course is run in conjunction with the Scottish Canoe Association. The course provides you with the fundamental skills to rafting by introducing and developing your techniques that are required to safely guide rafts on rivers.
White Water Rafting is one of the most fun and popular river experiences in Scotland. Learn to guide a raft down rivers safely, look after your crew and have a good time.

The Raft Guide Training Course Content:
- Part A – Personal Paddling Skills
- Part B – Rescue Skills
- Part C – Safety, Leadership & Group Skills
- Part D – Theory
The training will be delivered in grade 2/3 water as deemed appropriate by conditions and the providers. The assessment at the end of the course will be on grade two water.
Brief outline of the days of on the Raft Guide Training & Assessment Course:
- Introduction to the course and the Syllabus – go out for a rafting day on the river looking at river reading and personal skills.
- Back to the river, combined with rescues using throwbags, swimming in aggressive and defensive and raft flips.
- River day and ropework rescues of traps boats and people.
- All about leadership and personal paddling.
- Mop up any skills needed and practice anything required
- Assessment day this is a full on day combining all four parts of the course content.

We pride ourselves on providing as much kit as possible for you. However, the list below is what we recommend you should bring to your Raft guide training course:
- Something to go underneath a wetsuit – swimwear or a spare pair of underwear. (We do provide swimshorts to wear over the top of the wetsuit for greater style and modesty.)
- Travel insurance. (We are insured for all our trips, but we recommend everyone has their own travel insurance as well.)
- Transportation to the venue. (We may be able to help with this though – if you need transportation please drop us an enquiry and we can see what we can do to help.)
- Lunch, water.
- Personal medication
- Everything that you wish to bring kit wise as most people prefer to use their own personal paddlesports kit.
Here at Highland Outdoor Adventures, we pride ourselves on providing as much as we can but you are welcome to bring your own equipment if you do prefer. The list below is what we provide you with on the day.
It is expected normally when sitting awards like this people would come with at least their own personal equipment but we appreciate this is an entry level coaching award and not everyone may have things yet so we can still supply equipment if needed. We do find that people prefer to use their own.

If the weather is good we will have a DSLR professional camera so we can take photos and videos of your adventure and you can look back at the day for years to come. If the weather is less favourable we will bring a GoPro (as it is waterproof) so we will still be able to take photos for you.

Please look out for the van branded with our logo’s on all sides. We will always get there early and try to park up prominently for you to see us. We will meet at the Spey for day 1 of the course and then determine the other rivers to be paddled on a day by day basis.
