Raft Trip Leader Grade 3 Assessment Course Information
The Paddle UK Raft Guide Trip Leader 3 is run in conjunction with the Paddle Scotland. The course assesses you in the fundamental skills of rafting following the Paddle UK syllabus and is provided by our Paddle Scotland providers. Take your rafting to the next step!
Our providers do the most to ensure that any stress is kept to a minimum on the day and instead aim to enjoy the day without putting pressure on people. You will be kept in the know the whole day with regards to any element of the syllabus that are needing to be seen. But we recommend you familiarise yourself with the syllabus and also have a look at the assessment guidance as linked.
Leadership eLearning and other online resources – The Paddle UK provide an option e-learning module which guides you through the principles behind the Paddle UK Awarding Body Model of Leadership. If this is of use to you then take a look here!.
White Water Rafting is one of the most fun and popular river experiences in Scotland. Guide a raft down rivers safely, look after your crew and have a good time. And the trip leader level three guide is a qualification that is sought after around the world for rafting companies.
We will meet at Dulsie bridge at 10:00 where we will kit up, you will meet the mock clients and we will then do a shuttle. The day is split into four sections so please familiarise yourself with the syllabus in advance.
Prerequisites for Paddle UK White Water Raft Guide Grade 3 Trip Leader Assessment:
- Valid NGB membership
- Registered for the course
- Safeguarding course
- First aid course
- White water safety and rescue
Paddle UK Raft Guide Grade 3 Trip Leader Content:
- Part A – Personal Paddling Skills
- Part B – Rescue Skills
- Part C – Safety, Leadership & Group Skills
- Part D – Theory
The Paddle UK Raft Guide Grade 3 Trip Leader will be delivered in grade 3/3+ water as deemed appropriate by conditions and the providers.

We pride ourselves on providing as much kit as possible for you. However, the list below is what we recommend you should bring to your Raft guide Grade 3 Trip Leader Assessment:
- Something to go underneath a wetsuit – swimwear or a spare pair of underwear. (We do provide swimshorts to wear over the top of the wetsuit for greater style and modesty.)
- Travel insurance. (We are insured for all our trips, but we recommend everyone has their own travel insurance as well.)
- Transportation to the venue. (We may be able to help with this though – if you need transportation please drop us an enquiry and we can see what we can do to help.)
- Lunch, water.
- Personal medication
- Everything that you wish to bring kit wise as most people prefer to use their own personal paddlesports kit.
Here at Highland Outdoor Adventures, we pride ourselves on providing as much as we can but you are welcome to bring your own equipment if you do prefer. The list below is what we provide you with on the day.
It is expected normally when sitting awards like this people would come with at least their own personal equipment but we appreciate not everyone may have things yet so we can still supply some equipment if needed. We do find that people prefer to use their own.
